Domino Mode: OXI ONE MKII manual

Domino mode on the OXI ONE MKII: a trigger layer of up to 64 steps drives a note layer of 32 steps, in mono or poly. Rhythm and melody stay independent but in sync.

6.10 Domino Sequencer Mode

Domino is a trigger layered sequencer with independent, but synchronized, trigger and note layers. The trigger section consists of up to 64 steps and is populated with triggers that will then control the 32 steps of the note section. Each trigger that is activated in the trigger section drives the position of playback in the note section. The note section therefore generates a melodic or beat phrase at the sequencer output using the independent rhythmic nature of the trigger layer. Domino can operate in Mono or Poly mode.

Creating a Sequence

Creating a Sequence diagram

Select the Sequencer. Quickly tap [Pad].

Select the sequencer, Tap sequencer pad [1] - [8]. Set the sequencer mode to 'Domino'.

The [Init] and [End] buttons will display the start/end locators of both the note and trigger sections. Tap the step pads to locate the purple start and end markers on either section while holding the Init/End buttons.

Creating a Sequence diagram: Add / Remove a Trigger. Tap a trigger pad.

Tap a, dark purple trigger section [Pad] to activate or deactivate a trigger step. Active steps are brightly lit in the sequence color.

Creating a Sequence diagram: Add Note or Chord. Hold [Pad] + Press Note. +

Hold an unlit, empty step [Pad] in the note section + tap the keyboard note or play a chord with up to 4 notes to apply it to the step.

Domino Sequencer Parameters

The generic details of the sequencer setup, track and step options have been covered elsewhere in this manual. Here is a summary of the options for the Domino mode sequencer. The [Page] button will flash to signify that multiple pages exist. Press [Page] to to cycle through the available pages. Hold a knob to reset its parameter to default.

Voice. The voice option will switch between 'Mono' and 'Poly'. Typically you can use mono for single note phrases, maybe percussion applications, while poly, the default, is used for chords and multiple voice applications.

ChMx. Channel Multiplexing. The ChMx setting will redistrubute the active voices, typically created from a chord, to the other incremental MIDI channels, upwards from the base. The current sequencer channel is the 'base' starting point. When set to an option other than off, it is applied to all chords in the sequence.

The options other than Off, are 2Lo to 8Lo and 2Hi to 8Hi. Hold (ChMx) knob to switch between Lo and Hi options. With channel multiplexing on, the following behavior applies:-

Lo represents the lowest note in a chord. The lowest note always remains on the base MIDI channel. Each of the chords other notes will be directed individually, in increasing pitch order, to the consecutive MIDI channels. Notes are spread over channels based on the Lo span number selected. At the end of the Lo range the next note will wrap back to the base and the cycle continues.

Hi represents the Highest note in a chord. The highest note always remains on the base MIDI channel. Each of the chords other notes will be directed individually, in decreasing pitch order, to the consecutive MIDI channels. Notes are spread over channels based on the Hi span number selected. At the end of the Hi range the next note will wrap back to the base and the cycle continues.

Example: 2 notes (C4, G4), Base sequencer channel = Ch 1 and span = 2:

- 2 Lo: C4 is sent to Base MIDI Channel 1, G4 is sent to MIDI Channel 2. If the chord had a third higher note, should it exist, it will wrap back to the base channel - 2 Hi: G4 is sent to Base MIDI Channel 1, C4 is sent to MIDI Channel 2. If the chord had a third lower note, should it exist, it will wrap back to the base channel

Operating Behavior

In simple terms, the note track will play the melodic or beat pattern based on the steps and notes/chords applied. The transport and iteration of the note steps is controlled by the trigger section. Each time a trigger or a trigger repeat is activated, the note sequence will move forward one step per trigger/repeat.

The generative and unpredictable nature offers a unique experience in pattern creation, especially when applying different lengths, repeats, logic and conditions between the note and trigger sections and using the note section accumulator and more advanced repeats. When applying chords, ensure the sequencer voice setting is set to Poly mode.

Operating Behavior diagram: Apply Notes or Chords Sequencer position is advanced to the note steps when a trigger is activated. cv gate Note Section Top x2 Rows, Max 32 Steps 1 32 Each trigger will advance the note sequencer. Each trigger...

The keyboard allows notes or chords, in poly mode, to be played and applied to steps in the note sequencer section. This is a 2 Octave range, based on the current scale and root and offers transposition and velocity setting.

Both the note and trigger section layers have the ability to apply advanced sequencing techniques. This allows a complex yet creative environment for sequence generation. The random step generator is not available in this mode.
